Avoid getting a job - Or make sure not to keep it for too long

But… having a job still means exchanging time for money. It’s really ok to get a job, gain experience, quit this job, get another one, gain more experience… but usually it means using your previous experiences to fulfill the requirements of your new job, so you end up repeating the same thing over and over again, what really changes then is your workplace.
The experience you gain while working for a company can, of course, help you later on, no doubts there, but i like to see a job as a “do i really want to do this?” kind of thing.
For example, if i wanted to buy a restaurant.. would i just go ahead an buy it, and start working and managing my restaurant? Of coure not! I would first get a job in a restaurant, work there for a couple weeks or months, and then i’d probably say to myself something like:
umm.. not what i expected.. let’s find something else, and make sure you don’t buy a restaurant buddy!
Or if i liked it, i would think about it a little more, and maybe go ahead with the process and finally i would own my restaurant! If you’re planning on starting your own business, having your own store or something, why not work for a similar company for a while to get the taste of what it’s like?
So why should you avoid getting a job?
Ok, i could go on and on with that, but you get the idea. So why not be your own boss and be self-employed, there are a lot of ways to generate revenues when you are jobless!
The security of a paycheck means nothing to me, i prefer not having that feeling of security, and make more money!

***Jon***
This is a great post. Ultimately it comes down to what a person values more: security or freedom. We, being entrepreneurs, value freedom over security, but that doesn’t mean we don’t need any. Making rash choices, lacking prudence, acting irrationally all the time will get us nowhere fast. On the other hand, taking calculated risks will get us out of the rat race in onto the fast track.
Work for ten years and get ten years experience, not one years experience ten times.
Thanks for taking the time to link to my post :-D
An interesting post Jon. I wanted to write about it next month - as I’m planning to quit my job at that time. One of the things I hate about keeping the all too regular 9-5 kind of job is - that it tends to limit my creativity and potential. I don’t want to tie up with what I consider lowly remunerated job for the rest of my life. It’s a suffering.
I love this post Jon. Its been twenty long years and I havnt drawn a dollar in salary. Yes that was 20 years back I met a guy who asked me if I was interested to be in a place of work where I could write my own cheque and have all the freedom as well, since the work was legitimate I jumped at the offer. I took the risk although many discouraged me.
That was my introduction to Financial Services (explains why I write about financial planning matters in my blog). In that office there was a quote, “How long you will survive in this business, depends entirely how well you handle your bad days”.
I work with a good company but I don’t work for them. I am my own boss, even my contract says I am self employed. There have been ups and downs and frustrations too, but I can confidently say I have loved and enjoyed my work and if I was to live my life again I would prefer to be in the same kind of work. Sure in all these years I have been offered many jobs but I had too much to lose than to gain in a new job, thats the FREEDOM I enjoy in my line of work.
Bottom line, there is nothing like being your own boss. I totally agree with what Bryan Baker said about Entrepreneurial Spirit., don’t be afraid to try new things.
OOPS, this comment is kind of long, gives me an idea I could write a post on this someday.
Cheers.
wow, really in depth and motivating replies guyz! :)
I value freedom way more than i value secutiry. there’s this point where security doesn’t mean much, and you don’t necesarly need that security. Good quote Bryan!
Calvin, you have an extremely interesting point there about creativity and potential, when i worked in sales and marketing for a telecom company (about 5 years) i felt i was doing less and less music, and wasn’t feeling really creative, now it’s completely different, i can get way more stuff done in one day, and i don’t mind at all working 18-20 hours in a day, when you love what you do it’s great!
Hey Robin, that would be an awesome idea if you wrote a post about that! You have lots of experience, and it shows in your postings! Keep it up!
By the way guyz have you checked my “wanna be a guest blogger” page? If you’re interested lemme know! That would be great! You all have really useful and interesting blogs, and i’d be extremely happy to have you guyz as guest bloggers! :)
Take care!
That brings us to the question: What’s your destination?
Having a million or ten million bucks when you retire?
Owning a penthouse in Manhattan?
Marry Kate Beckinsale? Brad Pitt?
Take a space flight?
Or, is it just living life? To some adventurers I’ve known, the JOURNEY is the DESTINATION.
Simply put, living life to the fullest, and making the most possible of each moment.
You’re absolutely right, the journey is indeed the destination! And perfection is not a destination, it’s a journey!
Owning a penthouse in Manhattan sounds good! :)
