Blog Catalog, one of my favorite community sites is having a contest, where you can win $2,500USD. I thought I could mention this on here, cause I know you guyz can come up with killer ideas.
Here’s the official post on the BlogCatalog Discussion Forum.
Develop, create and submit an idea/innovation plan that when implemented will make BlogCatalog the most extraordinary Blogger Social Community on the internet. - BlogCatalog
The goal here is to get people to submit their ideas on how to make BlogCatalog a better community site! An extraordinary community site! :)
Not just “usual” ideas, they already get hundreds of ideas from their members, but an innovative one! Write a plan or presentation and submit it to BC by the end of August. End date is on August 31st.
I Have Something On My Mind
I already have a nice idea I’m developing, well, I hope it’s a nice enough idea so they will implement it, and will submit to them, in the hope of getting my hands on that 1st prize, or even 2nd prize would be cool ($500), hehe
Please, don’t write your ideas on here, as you probably don’t want anyone to submit that same idea before you do.
I think this is a great opportunity, and can be a lot of fun, and have the chance of winning some money. Which is always welcome.
Your Turn To Talk
Have you ever participated in a contest either because of the prizes or to gain more exposure to your own site? Which contests? Do you think it’s a nice idea, and do you sometimes participate? If you don’t usually participate in contests, why is that? I’m asking you this, cause I’m thinking of holding a contest on my new blog, and would like to know what you guyz and galz would be interested in, and what would make you wanna participate.
Take care :)

Jonathan,
I am using my Jedi mind power to peer into your brain and steal your idea. I have a dream of hitting 25 strip clubs in September, spending $100 bucks at each one.
I need the money!! LOL
Okay, actually what I was thinking is that great minds think alike, so we’ll probably come up with a similar idea anyway. Oh well, let’s submit and see what happens. If BC doesn’t like our ideas, then we’ll just use ‘em ourselves! ;)
Aaron, man I had a laugh! haha is that part of your 10,000 fists to freedom challenge? lol
Aaron, if you’re up for it let’s make a deal, if we come up with a very similar idea, if both our ideas are real close, and one of us wins, we split 50/50, so that would be $1,250 each, and we both give $250 to charity, how does that sound? :)
wow, that is great I know I am real creative so I can think of somthing…
thinking…
thinking…
Hi Ian, submit your idea, never know! :)
I wouldn’t mind a second prize, it’s still $500.
Have you guyz ever participated in other contests? like logo design, or copywriting contest or something like that? What were the results? Which contests?
I designed a logo for our college monthly magazine, won the contest and they still carry the same logo on that mag, that was 30 years back. I have great ideas about a header for my blog, but havnt a clue how to do it… sob sob.
I am not sure if I will participate in this contest but if I do you will have to settle for the second prize…lol. I don’t participate in many contests for 3 reasons. 1 I am lazy. 2. I am too much of a perfectionist I think. 3. I don’t have much time. Does that sound like a neat list of excuses?
Take care and cheers bro.
Hey Robin, hehe I can deal with a second prize bro! :)
This is indeed a neat list of excuses, but if you want I can develop your idea and submit it to BC, then if we win we split :)
If you had such a good idea that would make them the best community site on the net why would you give it to them, with the only reward being 2 and a half grand. Just think, if Tom who came up with the idea behind Myspace sold his idea for 2 and a half grand before it became popular…he wouldn’t be loaded with the money he is now. Just a thought!
Hi Pingable, humm you bring a good point, I haven’t thought about that. Probably because the people on BC have a great sense of community and would do a lot to improve how they interact with each other, and most of them are not programmers and don’t have the financial resources or expertise to bring those ideas to life. The idea I have, I honestly have no idea how I could implement it, and I don’t run a social networking/community site.
But you do bring a really good point, gives me some more food for thought.
Hmmm.. Pingable has a point. but that’s assuming you have a great idea and you’re willing to put the work in to make it a reality yourself. BlogCatalog’s on to something though–$2500 is a pretty cheap price to pay to get a few hundered people to tell you their best ideas of how to improve your business.
Hey Zen, yeah Pingable really has a good point there.
$2,500 is pretty cheap, you’re right. I will submit my idea and see what happens anyway, cause I do not have the audience and the level of exposure BlogCatalog has, it would definitely be harder for me to implement my idea.
Just like when you work for a company, and you have a meeting and people brainstorm and give ideas. Winning that contest would most probably put the winner on the map (so to speak). We’ll see :)
(by the way, I’m not affiliated with BC in any way, so I do welcome comments, positive or negative. And I’m sure the folks at BC would be interested in hearing what you guyz think)
I participate on contests if the prize is something that I really want. Is simple !
Same here! I wouldn’t mind that money! :)
And I’d probably give something like $250 to charity.
$2500 is a bargain for an idea that puts BC over the top! Oh well, it’s their contest and a good idea. I’m in too Jonathan.
As I mentioned at BC, I hope that they will publish all of the submitted ideas. There is often gold dust to be found mixed-in with the dirt!
Hi Daniel, I guess you’re right, it is a bargain, but considering the exposure the winner can possibly get, it’s pretty cool :)
