Congrats To The Winners - DavidAirey.com Turned One

The reason I’m writing this, is because I was a sponsor in this contest. I told David I’d give 3 prizes:
- A custom header/logo design
- A 125×125px ad spot on SmartWealthyRich for 30 days
- A 125×125px ad spot on FreelanceFolder for 30 days
The winners:
Jon from Dyers.com won the 125×125 spot on SmartWealthyRich, Dan Sitter from Idea-Sellers.com won the ad spot on FreelanceFolder and Ad Tracker won the custom header/logo design, which was part of the Bronze award along with:
- 1 hour optimization consultation with Daniel Scocco of DailyBlogTips
- Revolution premium WP theme package from Brian Gardner)
- Blog review and email interview published on Make It Great from with Phil Gerbyshak
Again, congrats to the winners! :)
So, Why Should You Consider Becoming A Sponsor When Someone Is Holding A Contest?
The main reason I wanted to be a sponsor was because I really like David’s blog, and he worked really hard on his blog for that first year, he really deserves the exposure, and this contest helped him break the 2000 rss subscribers mark on his blog (congrats!). And also I have to say I didn’t mind the extra back links and exposure to my blogs.
In less than a month, I got over a hundred links from different blogs pointing to both SWR and FreelanceFolder. How cool is that?! :)
Congratulations to David and to the winners!

It was very kind of you to offer those prizes, and thanks for writing this follow-up post for the winners / sponsors.
The prize draw was a great success, although there was one downside, which I’ll be writing about very soon.
Thanks again Jon.
Thanks for being a sponsor of David’s great contest and thanks for the link love.
I’ll be in touch about the logo/header as soon as I can catch my breath and decide what I would like to do.
David, it’s my pleasure, I really enjoyed the extra exposure being a sponsor in the contest gave me, and I’m more than happy to sponsor any other event/contest you’ll do in the future :)
wondering what that “downside” was though
Ad Tracker, you’re welcome! :)
Drop me an e-mail anytime, and by the way if you need any help setting things up with WordPress or putting my header/logo up or something, lemme know (I know the revolution theme inside and out)
Jon, what’s a good way to find out about a contest in order to offer a sponsorship before the contest is announced?
Thanks a lot, Jon. I really appreciate the ad space!
Jon,
Those are some pretty nice prizes you donated. Do you have any recommendations for those of us with limited coding skills? And like Travis asked, how do you find out about these contests?
Hi Travis, good question, in fact David contacted me, I didn’t know he was preparing this contest, so I told him I would be happy to offer some prizes.
Best advice I can give would be to network within your niche, or even outside your niche, get to know some bloggers a little more. Since I started blogging I met so many cool people, that became friends along the way, people I know I rely on, and they know they can ask me just about anything :)
I think a good thing is to find some blogs you really enjoy and, be active in the comment section (just like you’re doing on here :) )
Jon, you’re very welcome, thanks for sending me the banner, hope it sends some traffic and readers your way!
Hi Chris, well I think it’s not necessary to have coding skills or anything, of course you have to offer something of value. It can be a banner spot, a blog review, consultation, interview, text-link ad, or just about anything. Sure some prizes like a custom WP theme will probably hold more value, a review, some free advertisement, an interview, links, those are great prizes :)
Well, if you decide to have a contest anytime soon, let me know. I’d definitely be interested in contributing.
I’ve just published a blog post that might come in useful for those wishing to run a blog contest.
To my detriment, Google imposed a penalty on my site, although now I’ve gratefully overturned the penalty.
Travis, awesome, in fact I will be holding a contest, probably next month or something. I’ll drop you an e-mail :)
Hi David, great job on getting everything back to normal with your blog on Google. I didn’t see this as black-hat, but after reading your post I have to say it’s eye-opening, you really did a great job, very professional way of getting Google to like your site again :)
Thanks Jon.
It’s incredible the difference a Google penalty can make. Thankfully I don’t place all my eggs in one basket, but I can imagine it’d cripple some businesses.
Smart move Jonathan - upcoming contests are definitely something I’ll be on the look out for. I love this because it’s a win, win, win situation for everyone.
And thanks David for going into detail about your penalty - though that was a bad experience - I’m sure that the lesson learned will be extremely useful for many people and probably generate quite a few links! In fact - I’m going to link to that post in my Friday roundup on CBG. :D
David, yeah it’s something, you’re getting quite a bit of traffic from Google. Let’s just say I added nofollow to many links after reading your post. Only thing is the TLA links….
Christine, makes me think, the contest you have on CBG, how was it? Was it worth it, the $300 in podcasting gear? Did it help you get some good exposure for the blog? :)
i am also interested in the contest - let me know
