Never Underestimate The Power Of Personal Recommendation

Every single day bloggers write posts, and often link out to other blogs, and recommend articles to their readers, which is something I do every Sunday with my “smart posts worth reading” posts.

First, I do this because I really liked the posts, and also because I like to give some exposure to other bloggers, and I think the articles/post I link to are relevant, and I hope my readers enjoy them. It’s like a personal recommendation, from me to my readers. And many many bloggers do something similar, often called “Speed Linking” or “Link Love” or something similar.

Another reason for this is because it’s always nice to have a “day off” (kinda) :)

Personal recommendation can go a long way in the blogosphere or in any business. People have been using word of mouth marketing for ages, and still today it proves to be really effective. When you recommend a blog post or article to people, chances are they will check it out and read it.

What About Interviews? It’s Kinda Like A Recommendation.

It sure is!

Christine, from Create Business Growth made me an awesome gift! She interviewed me, we talked on the phone for about 45 minutes/1 hour, and I have to say it was a really nice experience, as Christine is a wonderful interviewer. (you rock Christine!)

You can read the whole interview on Create Business Growth:

How He Built a Thriving Online Community and a Profitable Blog in 5 Months

I enjoyed the interview a lot!!

Of course, an interview is like a personal recommendation. Christine recommends my blog to her readers by publishing the interview on her blog. I cannot thank her enough!

Go read it! :)

Your Turn To Talk

Have you ever been interviewed? How was it like? I’m curious, and would like to hear (read) what you think. If you’ve never been interviewed before, do you think you would like it? I certainly did, and would say “yes” again in a heartbeat!

Take care :)

  1. I would like to interview you. I am a new blogger and I think it would be interesting to have an interview with a topic somewhere along the lines of “Successful blogger interviewing maybe-some-day-successful blogger” we can go over what new people should do, or not do, to attract attention, etc. Please reply with your thoughts.

  2. Yeah, and you spent the whole interview talking about someone else. That’s not exposure. That’s generosity. You are a wonder. Wow!

  3. Tyler, sure I’m interested, I’m gonna send you an e-mail a little later today or tomorrow and let’S start from there, sounds interesting :)

Liz, haha, well what can I say? I just feel it’s normal, I mean you taught me soo much! But I still talked about myself in the interview hehe :)
For people to better understand my blogging, it’s good they know where I come from, makes it easier, and they could actually take the same (or similar) steps I took and get to where I am now, that would be cool! :)

  4. Great interview! I really enjoyed reading more about you. Eh, can’t believe you have been blogging for only five months! Seems like you have been doing this for awhile.. I like your style and your gentlemanly way you handle yourself. Coming from a loud mouth… take that as a compliment. ;)

  5. Hi Susie! hehe, I take it as a compliment! :)
I’m really happy you liked the interview, I had a lot of fun being interviewed! :)

  6. I admire the bloggers who regularly put out cool lists of well crafted articles. I need to put a plan in place to do it at least once a month.

  7. Angie, thanks a lot. It’s actually pretty easy, I love to read :)

  8. Wow, Jon, great job. And the best thing is, you are still as down to earth as the first post you had made on this blog. Humble is a very endearing quality.

  9. Sharon, wow thanks! :)
you know, it’s after you read your own interview you see the bigger picture, it’s so cool! I really enjoyed the interview, I also learned a lot about my own blogging doing it!

  10. That was a super interesting read. I actually just got through doing an interview for the first time, myself.

Congrats on all your success, Jon.

  11. Hey Anthony, thanx bro!
Where can we read your interview buddy?

  12. Great post!
I have been trying to keep my blog pure photoblog with my own work.
But after reading this post and getting to know other bloggers I have decided to make posts like this too :)

  13. Thomas,

wow, that means a lot to me! :)
Hey photoblogging rocks, you have amazing pics on your blog by the way!

  14. Thank you for the compliment Jonathan! But really, with such an interesting subject, the interview practically wrote itself.

Jonathan is just as friendly and upbeat in real life as he is on his blog - It was very late when we talked because he had spent all day in the recording studio. Though he must have been exhausted, I could not tell in the least :)

I love doing interviews because I love meeting and new people and hearing their stories. Each person you come in contact with, whether in the grocery store or during an interview, has a lifetime of advice, experiences, and knowledge just waiting to be heard if you will only ask.

    Thanks again Jonathan!

  15. Christine,

hehe I usually feel energetic when I get back from the studio. And that last recording session, before we did the interview, was a wicked one. :)

You’re absolutely right, every single person we meet has experiences and knowledge, and we can definitely learn a lot just by engaging in discussion. which is what blogging is about in my opinion :)

  16. Hi Jon,
A bit off topic, but who designs your blog? It looks really neat and easy to read (not like some I could mention). Mine looks a mess in comparison ! Did you design it yourself ? I’ve just seen at the bottom of the page it says ‘modified by me’ - so congratulations on the modifications!

  17. Hi Vic, thanx a lot! I used the 3 column Cutline theme for wordpress and customized the design myself, happy you like it! :)

I still have a lot of tweaking to do, but it looks like I want it to so :)

  18. Hey Jon,

Congratulations on the new exposure. You certainly deserve it. As you know, I think you have a fantastic site here and I am glad to see that other people are appreciating it.

Thanks for introducing me to Christine’s site as well. I certainly look forward to checking it out more often.

As to your question, I think almost any blogger would like to be interviewed. If someone is blogging instead of writing in a personal journal it generally means that he or she wants to share part of who they are with readers. I think every blogger has a vision for his or her site and I think an interview is a great way to share some of that vision.

It was certainly a great interview for all parties involved. Thanks for letting us know about it.

  19. Andrew, thank you so much for the encouraging words! :)

I’m happy you enjoyed reading the interview. I think you’re right, all bloggers have different experiences and goals, and an interview is a good way to share some of that vision and tell our story :)

  20. Thanks Andrew, I look forward to seeing you around our blog and visiting yours as well!

  21. There’s a blog called Blog Interviews that’s for bloggers to submit interviews. :D

  22. Hey Jon,

The interview I did hasn’t been published yet, but it will be on disassociated.com, and is about web design.

  23. Christine, hey that’s cool, we’re all connected, and cause of your interview I got to meet some really nice people, who also contacted me through my contact form telling me they really enjoyed reading it! :)

Grace, thanx for letting us know about ths, I’ll have to check it out! :)

Anthony, awesome bro, can’t wait to read it! Oh and your new design rock!

  24. I will link to another blog’s post particularly if it is relevant and I don’t see a need to add or take away from the post. I did this just recently for a Live Earth Review I wanted to do , but The Turning Tide had already done so why re-do it. Just link to it.

  25. Debo, good point, and I usually will write a brief description of the post I’m linking to in my “smart posts” posts, so people know where they’ll end up and what the post is about :)

  26. If there were more people like Jon, the world would be a better place to live in, I am serious. He is my first friend through mybloglog, he is half my age so in other words I am experienced enough to smell a winner. He stinks of a winner…lol. I am not a techy guy so even the word blog sounds like Chinese to me, if you guys think that my blog looks good enough today its largely because of the help from my good friend Jon. Thanks Jon for all your help, we havnt had a chat on skype since long. I am proud to have a friend like you mate, keep up the good work.

Take care and cheers and GOD bless.

  27. Fortune Watch, that is so going into my miscellaneous file of marketing jargon - you stink like a winner. :)

  28. Hey Robin! wow, thank you sooo much buddy! That really makes my day! :) Hey, we have to chat a little on skype soon buddy! :D

    Take care bro!

Sharon, hehe, sounds good huh? ;)

  31. I worked as a freelance journalist so I have always been the one doing the interviewing. Would be cool to have someone interview me for a change =)

  32. SJ, well you know what? drop me a line! :)

I think we could arrange something. Not for smartwealthyrich, but I’ll be launching a new blog probably next week, anyway drop me an e-mail :)

  33. Jon, I just dropped you a mail.. hope to hear from you soon!

  34. A day off?!? I find that very often my articles that list recommended posts from other bloggers take longer to compile than a regular ‘content’ article!

    - Martin Reed

  35. Hi SJ, got your e-mail, lemme know when you get back buddy! I think we could arrange something :)

Martin, yeah, well I collect those posts and put the URL in a text file during the week with some quick notes, so it makes it a little easier to write it on Sundays. It’s not actually a day off, but most of the researching and collecting URLs is already done :)

  36. Hi Jon I’m back already. I sent you another mail but you might have missed it. Hope you get to see this comment and get back to me soon. Cheers!

  37. Hi SJ, got your e-mail :)
Will reply a little later today (I’m heading out now) do you have Skype?

  38. Personal recommendation is a powerful means of getting your message across and having people to agree with your thoughts and ideas. People will appreciate you for doing that and it’s well worth it.
