Rewarding Bloggers - DoFollow

Some of you might already know, if you are using wordpress, that the default setting in wordpress adds a “rel=nofollow” for each and every link that is posted in the comments section of a post. For instance, if you were to reply to this very post, you wouldn’t get a link back (entering your name and url in the reply form) and the search engines would not consider the url you entered in the comment form or in the reply text.

Until now!

I decided to remove the nofollow attribute to reward the people that reply and comment to posts! Isn’t that nice?

So as of now, every time you reply to a post or participate in a discussion, you will get a link back! For as long as you enter your name, your e-mail and the url of your site, you will get a link back to your site! A linkback just for participating and adding to the discussions! :)

How do you remove the nofollow attributes?

If you want to reward the people that comment on your blog and give them links back. Simply download the “dofollow” plugin (right click on this link, and select “save as…”) or visit I summon one Kim and download it from there.

To make this thing work, simply upload the dofollow.php to your wp-content/plugins directory, then login to your wordpress admin, and activate the plugin from the plugins page. Then you will see a new tab when you go to the “options” page called “DoFollow” and you can set for how many days you want to remove the nofollow attribute. On smartwealthyrich it is set to 0, meaning it’s always on!

By the way, don’t enable this plugin if your blog is not in “moderation” mode and comments are posted right away, or if you don’t have a good spam filter!

So keep commenting, replying and participating in the discussions! It’s a win-win situation! :)

  1. This is hot. I was always afraid to do this, because it might lower Page Rank on google. But what is Page Rank? I might consider this just to increase participation. Great Job with your blog!

  2. Hi Adam! My thoughts exactly! :)

You can certainly get a decent page rank even with the nofollow attributes removed, i believe in discussions and relationships, so if that can help increase the comments and participation level, i’m happy! Guess i’m starting to get the “relationship geek blogger” disease or something! hehe

  3. That’s great Jon! I think I’m going to do it too. That’s why I started my new contest Comment.Zation V1 , to reward the people who comment in my blog.

  4. Wow! that is great jonathan! but I still worry about the people who will take advantage of that “dofollow” I hope not.

Still! that’s a good idea jonathan.. you’re really spreading the love! ;-)

  5. You’re right, some people might take advantage of this dofollow thing, but at this stage i moderate the comments, and read each and everyone of them. I might put the nofollow back on one day, but i think it’s a great way to spread the love like you said (”sharing the wealth” sounds good too) hehe :)

  6. I come and comment because I like the stuff you write, so whether it’s no-follow, do-follow, three-follow, four-follow … it’s all good!

  7. And thanx a bunch for commenting Shane! :)

I know that not many will comment more “because” of the dofollow, but it’s a way to spread the love, and it’s my way of saying “thanx for replying”!

  8. Hi Shane,

I also had the ‘no-follow’ function disabled. It adds as an incentive for people to comment on your site, which is great, as it promotes interaction.

And interaction is a great way to keep in touch with your readers. =)

    Cheers,
    Jag

  9. Great addition to your site. I’m sure this will encourage discussion. I definitely saw an increase in comments when I turned dofollow on. You have to keep a close eye on the spam tho..

  10. Hey, that’s great, Jon. I think it’s a great way to reward participants. I did it and my only regret is that I wish I had done it sooner. Martin Reed at communityspark.com also commented to me that I should add a note that comments are “link love enabled.” I think that that is a great suggestion because then people will always know that they are getting rewarded for posting comments instead of accidentally finding out.

  11. You definitely have to keep a close eye on spam, i moderate every comments and have this spam filter enabled also.

I will most probably delete comments that have too many external links, i think 2 links in a reply is fine, but more than that, i might just go and edit the reply, unless the links are relevant and beneficial to my readers!

    Link Love is enabled! :)

  12. Opps sorry Jon,

I said ‘Shane’ in my reply, but I meant it to be you.

So sorry for the big boo-boo.

  13. Hey Jag, it’s all cool! :)

  14. I don’t know about the follow follow follow stuff mate, I am here because I love to read what you write. I love your writing style, its amazing how easily you convert your thoughts and feelings into words. Keep it up.

    Cheers buddy and take care.

  15. Hey Robin! Howz going? Hope everything is cool on your side!
Makes me think, we have to chat on skype sometime soon to check those things on your blog, let me know when you’ll be online mate!

Thanx a bunch for the kind words by the way, that’s what keep me writing! :)

  16. By the way how do you enable that “no follow” function? Aww man techy stuff…lol. And yeah buddy we need to have a chat someday, hope we can catch up soon.

    Cheers mate.

  17. The nofollow attribute is there by default, you need that dofollow.php plugin to remove that attribute or else all the links in the comments have the rel=nofollow by default :)

Indeed we need to have a chat hehe!

  18. I ‘link love’ enabled my blog and comments have definitely increased since - oh and the comments are good ones too, so they really add value to my blog.

The plugin I use allows you to reinstate the ‘no follow’ attribute on individual links should you so choose, but by default it is removed. This is good if you feel some people are beginning to treat your blog like a link farm! Details of this plugin are at:

    http://www.communityspark.com/make-your-blog-link-love-compatible/

As long as you install Akismet, or moderate your comments then spam shouldn’t be a problem. I definitely see more benefits than disadvantages - just make sure your readers know your blog is ‘link love enabled’!

  19. Hi Martin, i checked out your blog and must say you have some really really great posts on there! I moderate every comment that’s posted, but i will install Akismet soon, the more comments you get the more time it takes to go and approve them, not that i mind at all! :)

  20. Hi Jonathan - thanks for the kind words! My blog is only a month old so it is great that you think it is already holding some good content. I too moderate all comments at the moment, but will enable Akismet in the future.

  24. Very very cool idea. I’m definitely going to have to give it some thought! You’re definitely getting a lot of comments so bravo!

  25. Hi Court! Thanx a lot!
Yeah the “I Follow Movement” (if we can call it like that) is growing strong, it’s an interesting concept, and morally it just feels better, rewarding the people that post comments :)

By the way, make yourself at home, and welcome to smartwealthyrich!

  26. I’ve herad about this before but never really followed up on it or knew how to change it. Great post and i’ll be adding this to my blog. It might be an idea to have a reminder on your comment section saying that you share the link with comments :-)

  27. Hey Daniel, good idea, i’ll integrate something next to the comment box to remind people, it’s one more thing to add to my to do list, but i’ll do that eventually, good idea bro! :)

  28. You can find lots of other blogs with do follow on the D List too - a great list to use for finding others.

  29. Hi Colleen, thanx a bunch for stopping by, make yourself at home!

This d-list is a great idea, more links back from other blogs that participate, more popularity and it can help a ton with search engines. Let’s reward the people that take the time to leave comments, it’s more fun, and it’s a win-win kinda deal :)

  30. Wow & here’s us just considering Digg on our blog and this stuff seems way ahead. So many widgets to consider but the u commnet I follow seems the way to go. We’ve met on Blogcatalog
JCP and we’ve seen your discussion threads - fantastic…it’s appreciated.

  31. Hello there! thanx for stopping by! It’s really appreciated! Make yourself at home! :)

    :)

  37. I thought I might want to read more after the Top 5 blog list. Now, you may have to be one of MY daily reads! I’ve got to see about this (even though I am not a geek) and figure out if I can implement it. I want to reward people, too! This is wonderful

  38. Hi there! hehe happy you like my blog! dofollow is definitely a nice way to reward people that take some time to leave comments, some say it’s not really good for SEO, but i care more for the discussions and readers than seo :)

  39. Just went into my template and deleted all of the No’s in the comment file. Seems to have worked.

  40. Hey Adam, awesome, did it help increase th number of comments?

  41. Removing the no-follow is a great idea. I’m just getting my blog going so I think I’ll have to implement this idea right away.

  42. Hey Jason, welcome to SWR, make yourself at home! Let me know how it goes with the dofollow, if it helps increasing the number of comments you get, or if you have any questions regarding that, hit me up! :)

  58. I have finally made my move to join the D-list movement. Is there an official badge or something like to say your site “does follow”?

  59. Yes I have this enabled on mine to, and I’ve yet to see any spam from it. This ‘dofollow’ movement is spreading everywhere and I think it’s going to do a lot of good for the blogging community!

  60. This is cool. Thanks for the layman’s version of how to set it up.

  62. Thanx Steve! That’s where I got mine.

You can also join the bumbzee group started by Andy Beard at: http://www.bumpzee.com/no-nofollow/

  63. Looks like DoFollow is working well for you. There’s plenty of comments and action going on here!

  64. It’s working pretty good I should say. I removed the nofollow attribute more to reward people than to increase the number of comments. Seems it’s working anyway :)
    win-win

  65. I love your site. Added it to my google reader. Do you happen to know if blogger.com automatically puts a nofollow in their comments?

  66. Hi Tyler, thanx for subscribing!

I dont use blogger but I know there is a way you can remove the nofollow attribute. You can check out this article by Andy Beard

  67. Thanks for your great article on do follow! I just installed it today on my site!

  68. I just want to say thanks. I followed your instructions and now officially I do follow. I had “Goodlinks” but for some reason it wasn’t working. I really love your blog. It’s outstanding. I am a subscriber. Keep on writing great posts. Cheers!

  69. Hi John, awesome, welcome to the dofollow familly :)

Susie, thank you very very much, appreciate it, I’m happy my post helped.

  70. Jon,

Thanks for the great tip. I now have it implemented on my site :)

  71. Andrew, that’s awesome! welcome to the dofollow family :)

  72. Yep, ‘Following is the way to go. Luckily, I got educated on that by Dawud when I got started… I even made a mini-badge for it (you can see it (and swipe it, if you want) in the sidebar of my blog).

Dawud talked about defeating no-follow in the code, but then said that could be a pain, because of updating (and having to do it again). So, I use the no-follow plugin, and it works like a charm.

  73. Hey Adam, like the badge! I’m thinking of reorganizing my “badges” section of my sidebar, will maybe use that button you made, looks good :)

  74. I think removing the nofollow tag is one of the best things a blogger can do. Spammers do not go around checking if a specific site has it on or not. They just hit a huge amount of sites. Good work on taking it down!

  75. I am implimenting this today!

  77. Hi Russ, I think you’re right, but only thing is that there’s a “D-list” floating around, and some spammers take that list and leave comments only on blogs that have nofollow removed, just have to watch that.

Ross, awesome, thanx a lot for the link back too :)

  79. Hi,
Great idea and will explore further. Thanks and also what a great site you have. Much more to learn from you.

  80. Hi Rosli, thanx a lot for visiting, hope you find some useful infos on here :)

  83. […] (or the community around my blog). I was inspired originally by this post from Robert Merrill and further by this one with some ideas of how to make my blog more about the community. The first objective is to […]

  84. Jon,
Just wanted to let you know I joined the DoFollow movement too!

  85. I just created a DoFollow Tool that lets you search a huge list of site that have the DoFollow plugin installed on their blog. This lets you search pages with your targeted keyword, and since all sites are DoFollow, you can be sure that by leaving a constructive comment will give you alot of link juice back to your site. Check it out!

  86. It’s nice to see people not only keeping comments on - but adding DoFollow. Keep up the good work!

  87. Steven, awesome, welcome to the club! :)

Tom, thanx for posting this. I’m not really into “hunting for dofollow blogs” though, I prefer leaving comments on blogs no matter what I get in return because I enjoyed the post, so not necessarily dofollow blogs. :)

Hi Greeniologist, are you a dofollower? :)

  88. I didn’t know of such a plugin. Thanks a million Jon!

I’ll put it on my blog as well. One question though? Do you moderate all comments or just the first one people do?

  89. I use the semilogic dofollow plugin. I might switch though because I noticed it doesn’t take the dofollow out of the comments.

  90. Thanks for the link for removing nofollow by Andy beard.

Wanted to make my blog as dofollow and think the link u provided will help me in setting it up easily. Thanks

  91. Being relatively new to all of this (blogging) means that everyday I am learning something new. This a great way to help everyone that is helping you. What a novel (I hope it catches on) concept. I am going to give it a try myself.

  92. Hi,

You want to consider however that with the no-follow movement spread, ultimately it will decrease the search result accuracy (not that they are very accurate already) as links won’t be that important as a way to measure the relevance of the page. OK let’s destroy search engines! Only one question - how are we going to search actually?

  93. Hey, I wrote my own blog/comments section on my web site and I didn’t eben know about the rudeness that is nofollow.

Suffice to say I don’t have that on my stuff either. Should I have a badge?

  94. Here is something about nofollow tag that you never have heard before. Take a look yourself
