Should You Avoid Blogging About Blogging?

Many of the readers and visitors of smartwealthyrich already own a blog (or two, or more!), and most bloggers will write about blogging even if blogging is not the main topic of their blog. Why is that?

Ok, i do write about blogging on here from time to time, since i believe it’s one of the many ways you can earn money online (and hey the title of my blog is SmartWealthyRich, so i guess blogging falls in one of the 3 categories) :)

But everyone seems to be talking about that lately (or maybe since it all started? Back when the earth was created. ya!).

Sure blogging is a nice way to earn money, and you can surely make a full time income blogging, but a lot of people i know (me included) are not earning a full time income with their blog(s). Many bloggers are also into affiliate marketing, adwords, ppc, and that’s how they earn most of their income. Not from blogging.

So if you own a personal blog, a self-improvement blog, a dogs/cats blog, or any other kind of blog, where the main topic is not related at all to blogging, why talk about blogging, and making money from blogs?

Of course, if your site is about technology/gadgets, copywriting, news, seo/marketing, business/entrepreneurship, or something like that, or if your name is your domain name, the “blogging” category has it’s place in your sidebar. But other than that, why blog about blogging?

Maybe because we are bloggers and can’t resist talking and writing about the things we like and enjoy doing, even if not closely related to the topics of our blog(s). :)

What do you think?

  1. Another good post mate, trust Johnathan to make a post out of blue.

Gives me an idea, why don’t I make a post about blogging, something like “Profit With the Best Affiliate Programs from your Website”. Agreed there are millions of such articles, one more wouldn’t hurt, besides my site is about finance anyway.

If you ask me, why blog about blogging? my answer is simply why not? Its a good topic anyway.

    Cheers and take care buddy.

  2. Hi Jon! Good post! I agree with you, As you know my blog is about entrepreneurship, creativity, innovation, success, leadership and new strategies, but I also include some articles about blogging, but, applying new strategies as branding in blogs and all that, Why Am I going to post something like ” Adsense optimization” when there are thousands or millions of blog about that, We have to provide something different and unique.

  3. I think it’s hard not to post about blogging. I know I will be posting on future goals, visitors, monetizing, etc. People want to know what you are doing if you are successful, or see what works and doesn’t.

  4. Yep I’m guilty of writing about blogging too even though it’s not my main topic! I read that 90% of blogs are about blogging? But then you know what they say about statistics!

I guess it’s easy to write about what your actively doing, so instinctively it’s kinda hard not to write about blogs when you spend so much time learning and writing about them. Personally I don’t mind the odd blog post mixed in with other topics.

  5. Since starting my site, my first few posts were about blogging. I’ve realized that there are so many sites with that info, it’s hard to offer anything new. I’ve tried to move on to other topics of interest. Not to say I won’t ever mention blogging again though:-)

  6. Hey Robin! Thanx a bunch mate! It’s true, blogging about money would be a good topic for fortunewatch (plus your top-of-the-line articles!), it’s simply one more way to earn money :)

George, adsense optimization, well i could definetely use that! I’m using adsense already and it’s doing pretty good so far, but i could use more tips and tricks for sure!

Glenn, you bring a good point there, makes me think, most businesses (i’ve worked in telecom for 5 years) talk about their business from time to time, not only their products (in the case of blogs, why not blog about blogging since it’s what we do)

Daniel, 90%! wow, i thought it was less than that, but it’s true when you look at the big picture, yeah most blogs have at least one or two articles/post about money making and blogging.

Anthony, you too bring another good point , “offering something new”, it’S kind of easy to write about something and then find out that someone else wrote something really really similar. I think one good way would be to talk about our own experiences, what is it that we’re doing that seems to work, and maybe invite others to try it out.

Hey thanx a bunch for replying guyz! :)

  7. If you’re talking about business, finance or the internet then I guess it’s only natural to blog about blogging.

As long it’s a new idea or a unique perspective, then it’s great! Otherwise, your blog runs the danger of going bulimic … and it just regurgitates the rest of the web all over your readers.

    Nasty. That’s gonna stain. :)

  8. Good one Shane, hehe, i wouldn’t want any stains, and i don’t want my blog to get sick that’s for sure! Each perspective is unique, that’s probably why a lot of people have blog(s), so they can express their ideas and theirselves. Gotta stand out a little.

  9. I think that people that are willing to talk about more than one thing, open themselves up to more readership. If you have friends you want them to be able to talk about anything with you. And you should do the same with them. You regular readers are not where you are going to make money anyway. Usually it is going to be from search engine traffic. or people that are looking for a particular product. Why do you blog Jonathan? What is the real reason that you sit in front of the computer and express your feelings and idea? If you had a sure fire way of becoming as rich as the google guys, would you share it with the world first, or after you made your money?

  10. mmm… really interesting questions Dwayne! I think you’re right, most money will probably come from the SE traffic, and those people will generallly not comment or reply to posts, most people that respond have a blog themselves and understand blogging. (ok soon everyone in the world will have his own blog!) But i made some money, honestly and sincerely recommending products, to other bloggers and online marketers (like the red book you see in my sidebar, Perry Marshalls’ guide to google adwords), most earnings are certainly from search engine, but i think that aapplies mostly to ad clicks (adsense) and other types of contextual advertisement. Say you’re selling an ad spot on your blog, probably someone coming from google won’t buy, but other bloggers might!

The reason why i blog? :) That’s for another post!

But let’s say i enjoy the discussions, exchanging ideas and thoughts with others, and sharing and learning with people.

  11. One thing i find interesting is the most popular posts on my blog (the ones that have the most comments and replies) and about making money, blogging and the likes. But my blog isn’t only about those topics, i also have copy-writing articles, self-improvement and network marketing, among the topics of my blog!

I’m wondering something now… someone coming from Google, who made a search, found one of your blog post, read it, enjoyed it.. why would this person take the time to reply? Bloggers take the time, cause we’re on the same boat, and we have common interests and share the same “passion”.. but someone coming from Google.. why would he or she take the time to reply after they read your post…?

  12. As Glenn Hawkins has commented above, “I think it’s hard not to post about blogging.”

If I feel like blogging about blogging, I do that on other people’s blogs* in the form of comments! lol… cause any such post on either of my sites would like a banana plant on the dunes of Mars!

Also, I’d think every self-respectin’ blogger has a need to share their experiences and a blog is an ideal platform to do so. I mean, you can’t talk about blogging while attending a funeral or in a business meeting or even a cocktail party where no one knows what’s blogging!

*Thanks all you folks out there for providing me with a place to blog about blogging! haha

  13. Oh I forgot to tell you , You have been tagged. Check out my blog, I am interested in see what you would write about if it was you very last post.

  14. RK: haha a banana plant on the dunes of Mars! Yeah i see what you mean, it wouldn’t be appropriate to blog about blogging on a celebrity site, cause your audience expects to read about ceelebrities, not blogging. But you can blog about blogging on here, it’s fine with me :)

  15. lol RK!

I love trying to explain blogging to someone who doesn’t know anything about it. They give you that look like all they hear is Charlie Brown’s teacher:

“waht waa waht wa, waht wa wa …”

  16. I have often thought about this, and when I changed my main site into a blog format a couple of months ago, I really wanted to avoid blogging about blogging. It seemed so overdone… however, as commenters have already mentioned, it’s hard not to. I want to do a better job at blogging on my 4 different blogs, so I read lots about it, and when I learn something interesting, I want to share it so it might help someone else out. So, I end up blogging about blogging after all. Ugh.

  17. Shane: hehe yeah that’s so true! hahaha Charlie Brown! totally!

Randa: Yes, it’s hard not to! For example, i’m a musician, most people care about the music i play, and the songs and all… but i soo enjoy talking about guitar, amps, gear and all that stuff, i just can’t help it! :)

Same with huge companies, every once in a while they’ll send a letter to their customers or the CEO will do an interview or something to talk about the “inside” of the business. It’s just that with blogging (since it’s relatively “new”) people seem to talk about it a lot, it’s cool, but at some point you kinda have to focus on the main topics of your blog.

  18. No, I don’t. I’m not even a blogger myself.
Ya, I’ve a blog, name sake. But my blog is just a communication tool !

However, I sell “Blogging For Dollars”, an info product of IMC mainly through
Google Adwords. Not a bad business.
    Be well.

    schee

  19. Hi Chee, yeah i signed up to IMC through your link, blogging for dollars seems nice. Though there’s a ton and a half “blogging products” out there, i might try 6 figues blogging (Darren Rowse of problogger.net), and also SEOBook (by Aaaron Wall), but so far the definitive guide to google adwords by Perry Marshall is doing ok.

I think i’m more of a relationship geek or something :)

  20. Jonathan,
    Be aware of this :
The # 1 Top Top Selling Product in IMC is the IMC Course –Wow ! We just got
    our 2007 version.
Mailloop is still very popular for the very serious online entrepreneurs.

Another top seller is : eBay Secrets

Focus on the top few product ( 3 to 5 max ) at the beginning (say, first 6 months),
you’ll do much better this way.
“Blogging For Dollars” from IMC can do well for you ‘cos you’re a good blogger !
But not so in my case.

So, see your name up there as the “potential top-selling IMC Affiliate” !

    Chee

  21. Cool, i tend to like promoting products that are not too close to the top of the list (more room for growth, and not over-promoted), but of coure i will try promoting all of the products :)

  22. […] I thought I’d do some blogging about blogging. […]
