Suggestions Welcome - Contest and Prizes

As some of you may already know, I’m starting a new multi-author blog this week. I just can’t wait, maybe I’ll be able to get some sleep once it’s all up and running, or maybe not! :)
I’d like to ask you something. I’m thinking of holding a contest on this new blog, to get the ball rolling and reward people that visit, leave comments and subscribe to the RSS feed. It’s always nice to know you can win something simply for being active in a community or on a blog.
I could really use your input and feedback on that.
A Good Example
I think the folks from Create Business Growth did a great job with their contest. $300 in podcasting gear is actually pretty cool. (congrats to the winner!)

I don’t wanna say too much about the rules for the contest, but I know many of you who read my blog or subscribed to the RSS feed, will probably wanna check out this new blog, so I thought I could ask you folks first. What prizes do you think would be cool? Only 1 big prize, or many smaller ones?

I’ve thought about a Wii, a 30gb ipod sounds good too. I’m not sure about the Iphone, as it’s not available outside US (if I’m not mistaken)

What about a gift card for iTunes? They are available in a bunch of different denominations, and they can be used for music as well as television/video downloads.

Jon, why do you have to front all the prizes??? Let some of us sponsor you and donate prizes to give away. Obviously the biggest sponsored prizes will get the most attention. It’s a win win.

I think a new domain, hosting, and a design might be a good thing for non-bloggers….maybe to introduce them into the world of blogging. Or, a gift certificate from giftcertificates.com, they can choose the one they want.

i’m curious, why the need for prizes? not that i’m not interested in getting cool things for doing something i already do for free…i’m just curious as to why you feel you need to give things away. increase in traffic/readers? appreciation of readership/feedback? boredom? just interested in the why.
Hi Erin, good point, well I don’t feel I “need” to give things away, but I thought it would be cool, when you buy something at a store and you get a discount, chances are you’ll be back to that store eventually, but with a blog it’s kinda hard to give discounts :)
Simply to generate some buzz, sure many people won’t be interested in the contest, what we want is people to be interested in the content, but holding a contest can definitely get people to talk about you/your business.

You have an excellent Technorati score and quite a bit of exposure, so how about considering writing a review of the winners web site, posting at both blogs and perhaps emailing the review to a few other top bloggers who might also pick it up!

Some of my idea’s have already been mentioned. I like the blog design/redesign, gift-certificates, and the blog review’s best. I’m not really a techie- so the I phone, video games and the like aren’t at the top of my list.
How ’bout a week at a villa in Italy or the South of France…oh maybe that only appeals to me ;) I guess I shouldn’t be so selfish!
You could also donate some cash to Kiva, in the winners name. I think you should have several winners. Good Luck!

Giving money to Kiva is already part of my plans, but more for SWR than this new blog :)
Do you know who could be considered a “minor celebrity.” For instance, a CEO of a company or an outstanding personal/business coach? Maybe they could donate an hour of their time or a free coaching session. They’ll get great publicity and it costs you nothing. I hope it works!

As most of the readers probably have a blog, I think the alternatives are better. Sure a car sounds great! Set up the new Audi TT, and you can count me in :) Money is always a good option. I can’t wait, for you to get this new thing up and running. Sounds like a cool project.

Hi April, donating money to charity is something I really wanna do, I already do this on SWR though. Maybe having a contest with one big prize, plus some money could be donated to charity, and the winner could chose to which organization. :)
