Technology Could Be Your Best Friend - Or Not

If you took a look at many of the posts from people who participated in the ultimate guide to productivity group writing project, you probably noticed that a lot of people mentionned technology as being something that is highly counter-productive. And i really do believe that it’s true to a certain extent. But let’s take a look at what technology can do for you today, that can help you be more productive, get more done and achieve your goals faster.
Technology - Time Savers
Blogging: You can publish your creations, ideas, thoughts, and whatever else you feel like, by pressing a button, instead of having to write all that on paper. And you also help save trees by using less paper, and digitally archives your stuff. And of course it’s easy to organize your creations (month, category). So it’s a time-saver if you look at it this way.
Phone: Though many people think cell phones are a pain in the a**, i think it can help a lot on the productivity side. Think about it, you’re out of the office and really have to make a phone call, well the easy and fast way is to use your cell phone, you can even keep doing what you’re doing while talking on the phone, and you don’t need to go and find a public phone, which would be too time consuming.
E-mails: It’s way faster to send an e-mail than to use postal services. If you send a letter, you can expect it to reach the other person withing a week, or maybe more than that. If, on the other hand, you send an e-mail, you can expect it to reach its destination within a couple of minutes, or worst case, in a couple of hours.
Planes: I’m attending the SobCon07 conference/seminar next week in chicago. At first i was thinking of driving to there (i’m in Montreal, Canada and it’s quite a long drive to chicago), but i decided to take a plane instead. That’s a real time saver. 2 and a half hour instead of 14 hours!
Online Business: It takes almost no money to start an online business as opposed to a traditional brick and mortar thing. The monthly costs are way lower in the online world than in the offline world, and i mean dirt cheap! No need to rent a space, buy office furniture, desks and all that. You can work from home, on one computer.
What about you?
How does technology helps you be more productive and closer to your goals? I think it would be interesting to know what people think of that. Do you see technology as a time-saver or as being counter-productive?

Hi Jon,
In the high-tech world which we are living in now, there is no escaping technology. We have to keep up or risked being lagged behind.
That said, I believe that us humans have been too reliant on technology, and it is sort of like a double-edged sword.
If technologies were to suddenly stop functioning, we will all be in deep trouble.
Last year in Dec, the cables undersea snapped near Taiwan, affecting millions of Internet users, and I was one of them. Emails can be checked. Deals can’t be processed. It was a nightmare.
Definitely the onus is on us to stay relevant with technology, but yet the challenge here is not to be over-reliant on them, which can be easier said than done!
Cheers,
Jag
Jag, you’re right about the double-edged sword. Here in Montreal a couple years back we had a huge ice storm, and a big part of Quebec was cut from electricity, and of course internet and all, was something like 20 degrees below 0, it was something not easy to go through, but on a certain level it was a good thing, learned to rediscover other means of communication, people helping others, and just for that i’d say it was worth going through that. :)
